Welcome to the Green Bamboo Shelter’s website.

We are a shelter for homeless male children from age 8 to 16 as well as for those with difficult circumstances. Our mission is to offer warmth, safety, the opportunity to learn and a chance to strive for a better life to those we take in.

Founded in 1994 by the HCMC Child Welfare Association (HCWA), which started as a group of Vietnamese passionate about children’s rights in Vietnam, the Green Bamboo Shelter is the oldest NGO in HCMC and was formally recognized by the city’s People Committee on the 16th of September, 1988.

We at the Green Bamboo ensures that our boys here receive nutritious food, care, and medical attention in a warm environment surrounded by loving staffs and friends who will accompany them through all walks of life. This also expands to their education, counseling, vocational training as well as learning essential life skills.

We always approach and welcome children on the streets and in poor city communities to prevent them from falling into poverty, abuse and violence because every child deserves to be protected.

In addition, we also assist the children in making legal papers and help them orient their careers. “Children are not things to be molded, but are people to be unfolded,” as author Jess Lair had once said. And we, too, hold that belief. The valuable lessons, skills and vocational training they would have had at the end of their stay would fully prepare them for the long journey unfolding ahead in life.

“Children are the hands by which we take hold of heaven.”

–Henry Ward Beecher, reverend, and social activist
